MEMORIAL WEEK WRAP-UP – SHARPSHOOTER STYLE
This past week was a full one — golf, family, guide trips, dog miles, and a quiet moment or two to reflect on what Memorial Day really means.
We kicked things off with a round of golf at Cardinal Creek on Scott AFB. Miley ran wild all day, off-leash and in her zone. Her collar logged 21.8 miles, but she snuck some cart time, so we’ll call it an honest 20.
Thursday & Friday we were on Lake Sara for a two-day guide trip. Bite was slow, but we managed a few. Saturday was for the family — Memorial Day BBQ and time with the folks.
Sunday, I hit the course solo while Miley rested.
Monday, we were back at it — she logged another 15 miles while I found my swing again. Hoping it holds through the weekend.
Tuesday was maintenance day — rods cleaned up, boat boxes straightened, gear tuned, and errands knocked out.
Then came today: a half-day on Carlyle with Keri and her son Lucas. Straight up — the bite’s tough. Real tough. We only had a short window and spent most of it getting Lucas dialed in on LiveScope. He picked it up fast, was dropping clean, and doing everything right. But those fish had no interest in anything we threw — jigs, color changes, minnows, you name it.
He finally stuck a solid keeper after gently spooking one and watching it come back — and hammered it on the next drop. It was well earned.
I played around a bit with one of Pops Crappie Jigs' grey hand ties and it moved fish better than anything else in the box. Mental note: those are staying tied on.
Afterward, I invited them back for a do-over. Then I found out Lucas’ dad is Active Duty Air Force — and I don’t offer half-day discounts on weekends?
Nah. Hold my beer.
I told them to bring Dad — we’ll do a full day, on me. Because it’s not just about filling coolers. It’s about making folks feel welcome, appreciated, and worth the time.
They didn’t catch many today — but they deserved better. That’s on me to fix.
And when I’m given the chance to show a service member gratitude with actions, not words?
I don’t miss.
